Building Confidence: More Lessons from the Camino.

Recently, whilst listening to a podcast about confidence, I experienced a real breakthrough. Reflecting on my recent blog about befriending fear during my Camino journey and in promoting my coaching business, I realized that confidence operates on multiple levels. It’s not just about overcoming fear in the moment; it’s also about believing in oneself to follow through, even when the going gets tough.

The 776km trek along the Camino de Santiago taught me invaluable lessons in self-trust and determination. While concerns about stray dogs, blisters, and navigation crossed my mind, my greatest fear remained unspoken: the fear of not finishing what I started. I was determined to complete the journey without shortcuts or compromises, carrying my own bags every step of the way.

Returning home, I began to grasp what this really meant – the ability to honour my commitments and see them through. The challenges along the Camino weren’t just obstacles; they were opportunities to prove to myself that I could persevere. If it had been easy, the reward wouldn’t have been as profound.

So, where does confidence come from? Not everyone can embark on a six-week trek across Spain, but everyone can celebrate their victories. Acknowledging our progress fosters a sense of achievement and self-assurance. Setting small, achievable goals is key; they should stretch us but also be within reach, allowing for frequent celebrations of success.

Public speaking, often a daunting prospect for many coaches and entrepreneurs, is a skill that can be cultivated. Just as they learn to guide clients, they can learn to address audiences with confidence. I assist my clients in setting achievable goals, such as crafting elevator pitches and delivering them to various groups. These small victories lay the foundation for becoming competent and confident speakers.

For those who view public speaking as integral to their business, I recommend exploring Toastmasters. As a member for over 20 years, I’ve gained invaluable insights from this organization. If you’re interested in delving further into these topics, I’m here for a chat anytime.

Confidence isn’t an innate trait; it’s a muscle that strengthens with practice and perseverance. By embracing challenges, celebrating victories, and investing in personal growth, we can navigate our journeys with this newfound assurance and resilience.
